EARTH DAY FAIR TRADE FASHION

Many of your favorite accessories and jewelry are created by indigenous communities from around the world.  Fair trade aims to help preserve their traditions and techniques and provide opportunity for sustainability of culture and life. When you purchase fair trade items, you are contributing to the success of these families. Your hand crafted accessories will help our artisans gain self-respect and dignity while making a living wage to afford the essentials such as nutritious food, education, and healthcare.
When you buy fair trade items, you are not only appreciating the skilled work of indigenous cultures that created your new purchase, but also giving opportunity for the marginalized men and women of these developing communities. Your purchase promotes improved living conditions and helps improve communities of our artisans.
In honor of Earth Day, I’d like to highlight fair trade ethical fashion and its impact on the world.  Fair Trade goods not only signify living wage standards for artisans but also means strict environmental regulations. Fair Trade discourages deforestation and the use of harmful chemicals.  It encourages organic farming techniques, recycling post-consumer waste, and the use of sustainably harvested natural materials while protecting natural resources.

While recycling keeps waste out of landfills, sustainably harvested materials keep synthetic materials like plastics, rayon, or polyester from being made in the first place.  Fairtrade celebrates products coming from nature.

Fair trade organizations and retailers source ethically sustainable fashion such as silk and muslin scarves. Not only does this help to sustain agriculture but represent a rich tradition in hand weaving, a skill that is passed down through generations. Hand dying with natural dyes into the thread without chemicals and handweaving into luxurious Fairtrade fashion. With the rise of fast fashion and the demand for cheap products, this tradition is making a comeback for those who desire eco-friendly clothing. The tradition has faded, being replaced by automatic machines that are bad for the environment and dangerous for the operators of those machines.

Think about the different resources used in creating all things around you, and whether or not you can lessen your carbon footprint with sustainable purchasing. Celebrate this Earth Day by supporting the Fair Trade movement and be mindful of what you wear and the impact it has on your planet.
